Summerfest: A Collaboration with PHL Fashion Bloggers

Don't we all fantasize about packing up and moving to a new city where nobody knows your name? I certainly do, but there are just a few things that tug at my heartstrings enough to keep me in (and/or around) Philly. One of those things is the kind, supportive, and crazy talented group of bloggers here. It's easy to feel alienated when you're in the throes of the elusive "hustle" in your mid-20's so any excuse to get together with like-minded folks is a good one. Anyone who can help you forget about life's troubles for a couple of hours is worth holding on to, which is why these ladies are so special.

Our theme for this month was simple: summer fun. We all found that sweet spot between comfortably casual and effortlessly chic. It would appear that a lot of 70's trends are alive and well in these photos, which I am very into.

Best Spots for #OOTD Pics (In & Around Philly)

All walls are not created equal. Sometimes an #ootd is only as good as its backdrop and finding the perfect one can take a lot of time and effort. Luckily, I've spent countless hours driving, walking, biking, or otherwise aimlessly wandering around to find some of the best so you don't have to. Pretty sweet, right? After a few years of fashion blogging, I've stumbled upon some absolute gems in (and around) Philadelphia. I'd be remiss to not share a few of my favorites so here's part one of what's sure to be an expanding list.

Old City Staycation (With The Ladies.)

Thanks Kimpton for sponsoring this post!

When "they" tell you that your first year of marriage is going to be a doozy, "they're" not kidding. (You know, the proverbial THEY.) Mine has certainly been no exception. Pretty much as soon as we got back from our honeymoon, it's been nonstop craziness. I left my job, he started a new job, I joined a tech startup, we're doing all sorts of odd-jobs so we don't have to live in a box on the street; it's wild. In midst of all that, how am I supposed to have any girl time? Girl time is important, especially for creatively-minded ladies, which is why I HAD to get some blog girls together for a little staycation in Old City. The folks at the Hotel Monaco were THRILLED to have us and we were just as excited to get to stay in such a beautiful place. I needed it. Long live girl time.

Sustainable Shopping with Greene Street

Thank you Greene Street for sponsoring this post!

Who isn't at least thinking about shopping ethically and eco-consciously lately? Like many of you, it's something I've thought about but didn't know where to start. Luckily, my friend Alli at Greene Street invited me to come to the store on South Street to play dress up and learn a little bit about fashion and sustainability.

Spring Around Philly

I've been getting SO many questions from readers who say they're heading to Philly this season. It's exciting because Philly is a fantastic city with so much to offer to visitors. Now that the weather has been getting warmer, I've found myself wandering around like a tourist because I just love this city so much. Since I've been getting so many questions and the last time I did a guide was in the fall, I figured I'd do another one. Once again, this is NOT an exhaustive list. I know I'm going to miss some things. I'm only human. Bear with me and if there's something that desperately needs to make its way into the guide, let me know in the comments!

Locals Only: Charlie's Jeans

philadelphia, style, fashion, blog, sebastian, mccallI loathe jean shopping. I loathe it almost as much as bathing suit shopping. No-- I think I hate it more because I've somehow avoided buying a new swimsuit for the last few years. When Charlie's Jeans asked me if I wanted to come in and try on some of their signature Sebastian McCall denim, I welled up with anxiety. Luckily my love for Philly-based businesses is stronger than my hatred for my thighs in some new denim. Charlie's promised to make the process painless and boy, did they deliver. May I say, my booty has never looked so choice.

Coffee with Friends

Slowly but surely posting all of the photos from the wedding and trip, including these we took before even heading to the airport. Violet and I have been online friends since I was 16. Flickr and our love of Eisley and Blythe Dolls brought us together. She and her husband Grant only had a short time in Philly so we maximized their time with us by bringing them to our favorite coffee joint. We had breakfast, fancy lattes, and good conversation. Grant snapped some candids. (And some not-so-candids.)

NYE with Chloe Johnston

minkpink, velvet, dress, habsa, chain, vest, harness, new years eve, philadelphia
This year is almost over and all I have to say is "good riddance." I can't wait to ring in the new year like I've never rang in the new year before. (Except I'll be working overnight... so I'll be doing it from my desk.) I was kind of bummed about not being able to dress up for NYE so it was kismet when Chloe Johnston asked me to put together some looks, I was all in.

Pear White Mocha and a Cozy Sweater

One, Shot, Coffee, Philadelphia, fashion, blog, Northern, Liberties, Camel, Sweater, floppy, hat,
I don't know why it took me so long to check out One Shot in NoLibs but I FINALLY did and I think I've found my new favorite coffee jawn. Perfectly-brewed joe in a cozy little space: what else do you need in a coffee shop?

Lace & Rust

Philadelphia, street, style, blog, Dilworth, Park, glass, subway, Madewell, Transport Tote, E.M., Ricchini"I'm gonna ask you a question, but you aren't going to like it. Are you a pagan? You got the outfit." A woman said that to me while we were taking these photos. I'm laughing about it now but it was an incredibly odd moment. Between her deadpan expression and seemingly genuine concern, it was one of the few rare moments I've been taken back to the point of absolute confusion-- speechless and confounded. I had no response and even now, no snide remarks. I'm still wondering what she meant though.

Feels Like Fall

The weather here in Philly has been wonderful. It's that perfect time of year when it's cold enough to wear boots... but Spruce Street Harbor Park is still open. It's a perfect instance of summer and fall harmoniously blending into one another-- and I'm not planning on wasting a single moment of it.

Farm to City Saturdays

Ah, Saturday mornings. Ah, late summer. I cherish these times. I don't get to Rittenhouse Square much in the height (and heat) of summer but once September hits and those brisk late-summer breezes start flowing, it's my favorite place. If you're one for local produce, fancy baked goodies, and fresh blooms there's a really great farmer's market every weekend that's absolutely worth checking out. This weekend, I made my own bouquet, which I triumphantly toted around the square. (And on a little coffee date with my bestie.)

Autumn Around Philly

Philadelphia, fall, autumn, things to do, New Hope, apple picking, cozy
Fall makes for such typical blog fodder. Everybody loves it and it's just so Instagrammable. The moody hues, the oversized scarves, the hand-warming hot beverages... it's disgustingly picturesque. I know it gets played out very quickly so I'm going to try to get my "OMG AUTUMN!" posts out of the way early on. With (allegedly) millions flocking to Philly in a few short weeks to say "hello" to Pope Francis when he stops by, I figured I'd make a mini list of some of my favorite fall(ish) activities. This is by no means an all-inclusive list so be sure to keep checking back!

That Time I Wore Some Overalls

One of my favorite things about living in Philly is the fact that there is art EVERYWHERE. Our Mural Arts Program is incredibly active in each and every neighborhood, which is something that I'm growing more and more appreciative of the longer I live in the city. In addition to providing great backdrops for outfit photos, it's nice to be surrounded by such visually stimulating and intentional pieces. At the very least, it's subliminally inspiring.

Red for Spring

Philadelphia, fashion, blog, bike, style, balayage, Marc Jacobs, While I'm sad that the cold and the snow is going away, I'm overjoyed that I'm able to ride my bike to work again without having to cover my face or worry about wiping out on ice. It's extra sweet that I'm working days/nights again instead of only overnights so I can actually enjoy the ride. I feel like hardcore cyclists with their fixies and powerful calf muscles must judge me for pedaling down the street in my cruiser (/road bike hybrid) with a wicker basket but I'm lookin' fly so I don't care. Do you like how my bag matches my bike? I didn't do that on purpose. I promise.

BOSSLADIES: Melissa Alam

Melissa Alam, Philadelphia, entrepreneur, business, woman, "The Hive",
From Race Street, it's just like any other building. Large windows, exposed brick and bustling conference tables are the norm in Old City, after all. As I open the door to walk inside, I'm greeted with a floral scent and the sound of keyboards clicking. Hard-working women are hunched over their MacBooks, cold brew in hand and an undeniable air of camaraderie between them. Despite its tall ceilings, it's not threatening in the least bit. In fact, it's quite welcoming. I instantly understand what sets this space apart from the rest.

Spruce Street Harbor Park

Nothing like a little lady date at the greatest urban beach ever created. (According to me.) There is nothing greater than the soft, gentle push of a pleasantly mild mid-August breeze. Add some black bean burgers, hammock hangs, and intermittent bouts of laughter scattered throughout deep conversation and it makes for one dreamy afternoon. Not to get too regional on you but it's these gems that make me fall in love with my city more and more. Sitting in a hammock over the water with a hibiscus vodka and ginger beer drink in my hand, I just couldn't help but think about how peaceful and happy everyone was within that little area. I then thought about how if all of those same people were together in their cars stuck in traffic on The Vine, the situation would be much, much different. There would be less "there's an empty seat right here!" and more middle finger. I guess that's part of the charm of living in a city though. You're surrounded by complete strangers all the time. They grind your gears on the subway and they smell terrible but when the hustle and bustle is stripped away, you begin to see each other as neighbors. A community. And while there are exceptions, moments like this make me think that we really do have each other's backs. Alright Philadelphia, keep winning over my heart.

p.s. Marisa has a blog, go check it out and tell her to blog more.

The Square

Winter is great because the overcast skies are the perfect backdrop for buildings and all of the fountains are empty. That's right. Empty fountains, perfect for various types of shenanigans.

P.S.  Isn't Becca adorable? She's a local photographer/blossoming entrepreneur. Check out her work!

Galentine's Day

I had the pleasure of hanging out with some Philly bloggers and store owners for a little Galentine's shindig earlier this week. It was a blast but the best part is that we're doing it again this weekend and you're invited! If you're local, come join us for Spodee cocktails, an ADORABLE craft from Sue of Giant Dwarf, sweets, and lots of laughter. If you're not local... hey, could be worth the trip... possibly?

Saturday, February 8th   |   5:00 - 8:00 PM
Starting at HOME, 1815 E. Passyunk Ave., ending at Occasionette, 1825 E. Passyunk Ave.
