PLAYLIST: Beautiful As Days Can Be

For the past few years, I've shared an autumn playlist on the blog. (Here's last year's if you're curious.) I'm completely aware that it's not fall just yet but I figured that I might as well get you in the spirit since, before you know it, we'll all be in a pumpkin patch, sipping Salted Caramel Mochas. (The far superior autumnal beverage.)

Stay Inside (Playlist)

It's not that I don't enjoy winter, I'd just rather admire the snow and the grey skies from indoors. Under layers upon layers of blankets. With some sort of piping hot beverage. Luckily, I work from home now, which means I can do just that. It also means that my playlist-making skills have been on point. Okay, maybe not but I still made one for you guys.

Gingerbread Latte Playlist

I have a confession to make: I've been listening to Christmas music since October. Yes, before Halloween. I was having a particularly crappy day and I did it just to cheer up but it didn't stop there. I just kept listening and listening and guess what? Despite what you may think about listening to Christmas music  pre-Thanksgiving, I haven't gotten tired of it yet. Now that there are only two more weekends before Christmas, I figured I'd share my playlist with you.

PLAYLIST: Every Leaf is a Flower

Albert Camus once said, “Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower." He was so right-- it's just as beautiful but kinda different. Fall makes me feel a certain way. In a rare moment, I had the house to myself last night. I sat in the living room with the window open, reading a a book about economics, sipping on some tea with whiskey and for that brief time, I felt okay. I was happy, I hadn't a care in the world. (Which is saying a lot... but we can talk about that later.) Since I haven't shared a playlist with you guys in a while, I figured I'd share the music I was listening to last night in my moment of Autumn bliss-- plus some more. I don't really know what these songs have to actually do with fall except for my strange connection with the season. Basically, these songs put to music all of the feels I get from Autumn.

Playlist: SPRING

I miss my little tradition of "curating" seasonal playlists for you guys, which is why I'm bringing it back. While my allergies are making me incredibly sleepy, this weather, the ability to ride my bike to work, and the sudden influx of iced Americanos (which you all know are my jam) have all been giving me life. I'm driving with the windows down again and boy does it feel good.

Christmas Playlist

How could I have gone through the month of December without the l&l traditional Christmas playlist? Answer: I couldn't have. Despite the fact that there are about six little melodies which get repeated and repeated ad nauseam, I'm still very, very  pro-Christmas song. Now, I'm not quite in the "it's okay to listen before Thanksgiving!" camp but I will say that come Thanksgiving morning, it's on. I think I may have listened and sang along to "All I Want for Christmas is You" three or four times on that day alone. No shame here! What are some of your favorite Christmas songs?

Booty Positivity Day

This happens at least twice a year. It's an all-too-familiar sensation. You've struggled enough to get your jeggings over your curvaceously thick thighs but there's a greater obstacle to overcome before you can suck it in, button, zip, and relax. The booty. You wiggle your way in and it's almost there when-- RIP. Both as an onomatopoeia as well as in a "R.I.P. pants" kinda way. Yes, my larger-than-life derriere did irreparable damage to yet another pair of trousers. It was only a matter of time. The pants were busting at the seams. At least it happened in the comfort of my own home and not in the middle of the office, or on the street. Regardless of where it happens, it's always somewhat humiliating. I stared at the remaining shards of pant. "My ass did that?" I think to myself. It looks like they were mauled by a cougar. I sit down, defeated. Why, though? Is a buxom bottom not some sort of medal of honor? It's some sort of desirable trait, no? It most surely is. A fat booty is celebrated in many ways, particularly by song. So, if you bust through a pair of pants any time soon, don't get bummed about your bum: listen to these (NSFW!) songs, shake what your momma gave you, and realize that there are women who endure the pain of implants just to have what you've got.

A Workout Playlist/ Giveaway

workout by E.M. Ricchini on Grooveshark Today, I'm teaming up with BassBuds to share my workout playlist. Music is important, right? I find that the wrong music can ruin my workout. My list is a little mix of everything: hip hop, rock, and even some metal. (I know, right?) Just as important as having the right music, the right headphones can make all the difference. I was thrilled to be able to try out these sexy gold ear buds because they make a great accessory in addition to sounding great. My favorite part is that they come with memory foam tips. They're extremely comfortable and they don't fall out of my ear even when I'm doing "intense" cardio. Listen to the playlist, it might be just the amount of motivation that you need to get up and get active. Also, you can enter below to win your own pair of BassBuds. May the odds be ever in your favor!

Spring Playlist

Spring has always just kind of flown by under the radar for me. Yeah, I love Spring fashion but Spring is usually a mad dash to tie up loose ends before wedding season is in full force, get all of my ducks in a row for tax day, lose all of my winter weight before the dreaded beach trips of early June, and battle allergies and sinus infections. This Spring, however, has been different. I've been experiencing it in a new and different way. Because of my career change, I took less than a quarter of the amount of weddings I've had these past few years. It's kind of bittersweet, really. I love wedding photography but I really feel like my place is in news. While the transition has been harrowing at best, I've been at an all-time-high for optimism these past few months. Other than that, the rest of it is just weird. Springtime is when I fell in love a few years ago. Without that relationship now, I've been getting nostalgic and introspective. The good news is that because of the extremely harsh winter killing everything and keeping it from growing back, my allergies have been better. Also all of the cabin fever compelled me to get a gym membership so I don't have to start at square one to be swimsuit-ready. See? Optimism. There is always a bright side to everything.

Magical Forest

One of my favorite parts of winter is the soft, sweet crunchy sound that fresh snow makes when you walk on it. It sounds especially magical in the woods, where it echoes slightly. These songs remind me of that crunchy snow sound and for that reason, I like them enough to share them.

Some Tunes for You

"We were so comfortable, living in each other's skin, I was dying from within."

This song succinctly describes my struggle. It's something that I believe happens to every early twenty-something as he or she is trying to find his/her place in the world. You learn who you love and then learn that tragically, love isn't enough sometimes. You learn the importance of your beliefs and convictions. You learn that the tiny sting of guilt is nothing compared to the torment of questioning everything you ever knew. It gets very existential very quickly. The entire process has been bittersweet, really. It's involved saying goodbye to some of my favorite human beings on God's green orb but it's also challenged my faith and, in the end, will have undoubtedly made it stronger. I am still a work in process but for the first time in a while, I can say that I know I'm going to be okay. This song is so beautiful and I'm glad to have rediscovered it. It's nice to know that whatever the struggle, you are not alone in the world. This goes out to all of you as well.

not another Christmas playlist

Confession. I made a Christmas playlist purely because of tradition and because I don't want to let you all down. Truth is, I haven't been much in the mood for Christmas lately. (I know. This is unprecedented for me.) Hanukkah came and went. It's been snowing since the weekend. The house is decked in red and green and yet, the spirit of Christmas eludes me. These past few months have been rough and I think this Christmas playlist reflects that. I'm going to apologize ahead of time: it's kind of a bummer. But you know what? It's okay. All of this soul-searching is painstakingly nudging me to rediscover the true reason for the season. As frustrating as the process is, how bad could the outcome possibly be?

Sun Song, Laura Veirs (Warp & Weft) - Everything about this song is perfect in my book. It's captivating. Ethereal. It's also pretty catchy-- I've been finding myself singing it at the most unexpected times. The words seem to mesh flawlessly with the melody and the little details are all in the perfect places. I've been listening to it on repeat because I've felt so stressed out lately and it does a good job of diffusing the anxiety. Give it a listen, you'll more than likely feel the same.

November: A Playlist

November is probably my favorite month of the year. The weather is a dream, the excitement of the holiday season starts building, and the leaves are crunchy and perfect. Despite this, Novembers have historically been a sad experience for me time after time. Could be the changing of the light, could be the constant stream of busy days with little or no rest, or it could be a tiny touch of seasonal affective disorder. I love it, but I also find myself melancholy fairly often. This November is certainly no exception. It's bittersweet because my life is starting to get pretty exciting as far as my career goes but in other ways, it's a mess. I feel as if you all have figured it out by now but I feel that I owe it to you all to let you know that I've been through a breakup recently. I've done a good job of being okay with it until nights like last night when I start listening to music and I realize that I haven't dealt with it but instead have just overwhelmed myself by keeping an extremely busy schedule so that I don't have to think about anything. Breakups are rough. Incredibly difficult. They take time to get over. There's beauty in the brutality though because in these moments, experience becomes a teacher of lessons one would neither listen to nor accept otherwise. I've learned a lot about myself in these past few months. Good and bad. I've backslid and I've grown. Some days are easy and some are difficult. I don't know what the future holds for me but I know how crucial this time is to soak up this knowledge about myself. It's funny how much you DON'T know yourself until something like this happens.

I didn't want to talk about this on here but I've since realized that doing so is incredibly selfish. I've made it a point to be transparent with you all and I haven't been doing a great job of it. I always said that I would share my struggles regardless of how difficult they may be to talk about. This, however, I did not want to talk about. It was too raw, too real. Through layers of reluctance, self-pity, and divine revelation though, I now know that the most important reason to share these hardships is so comfort anyone who may be going through it as well. We've probably all been through it and if not, we very well may go through it at some point. It's a part of life unfortunately. I want to tell anyone who may be going through it right now, you are not alone, and it does get better.

My encouragement to anyone with lost love right now, in the past, or for the future is to stay sweet. By that, I mean do not lose your precious vulnerability. Be willing to love again. To fall in love-- REALLY in love-- you need to put it all on the line. Love is a risk. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. If it does though... oh boy. Great things. How will you know if you don't try? Sometimes it doesn't work out and that hurts. But life continues. Not to be cliche, but think about it: it really is better to have loved and to have lost than to never have loved at all. It's okay to be really sad. You're human. Cry, please! You won't be sad forever so let it all out now. You'll feel better after a good cry. Also, take this with a grain of salt (mostly because it's coming from me and I never need an excuse to go shopping) but there is absolutely no shame in a little (responsible!) retail therapy. Go buy yourself a cup something nice. Even just a cup of fancy coffee. Spoil yourself a little bit.

It's difficult. It's REALLY hard. Some days I don't want to get out of bed. However, like all other things, this will someday fade away as well. I'm glad that I have you guys to keep my grounded. You're kinda all the bomb dot com. If any of you are going through this as well and need some advice, someone to vent to, anything, feel free to email me. All of my contact information is under the "Contact" link on the sidebar to the left of this post. Going through it with someone else is always encouraging. Now, before I get started with my busy day, I will leave you with this C.S. Lewis quote:

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”

some tunes for you

Chelsea Wolfe is my #WomanCrushWednesday every day of the week. Her music is hypnotic and she's kind of a babe. She's somehow made her way on to 80% of my playlists so needless to say, I was beyond elated when her newest album came out last week. I listen to hip hop to get my hyped up for work on my drive to Philly in the morning and then I listen to this album on the way home to decompress and reflect on the day. It's good, thoughtful, thought-provoking music.

That seems like as good a transition as ever to start talking about my life lately. You may or may not have noticed that I haven't been around as much. I'm hoping and working towards this being a temporary thing! This is a big transition and a life change. Working in the newsroom, keeping up with my photography business, keeping up with design work, continuing to freelance write, and maintaining this blog is proving to be quite a challenge but I'm sure I'll find a new rhythm soon. In the mean time, check back on my twitter often, because one of the best parts of my day is getting to share spontaneous little newsroom updates with you all! Once I get settled in a little more, I'll share about some of my experiences formally. Lots and lots of great experiences. Thank you all for your support and your kind words. When I feel overwhelmed, I come on here and read through the comments. They make me laugh and have even made me tear up once or twice. You're seriously all the best and I love you!

dog days playlist

The final few days of summer are always bittersweet. Carefree weekends in the sun turn into fingerless gloves clutching warm beverages and swimsuits and shorts change to chunky sweaters and boots. The time between these two extremes is precious. The quest to find the balance between lamenting the loss of warm weather and looking forward to cool breezes and changing leaves is almost artful. The transition is, to me, one of the most beautiful things that nature has to offer us. Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe it's time to pack up my sundresses. Okay maybe not yet.

some tunes for you

I can listen to Washed Out at any time of the year and it'll feel like summer. Not sure exactly why or how, but it's something that happens and I'm not complaining. I'm usually not a huge chillwave fan (although as a genre, it's growing on me!) but Washed Out's new album Paracosm is one that I can listen to over and over again. And, bonus, I'm not TERRIBLY late to the game because it only came out about a week and a half ago. Who cares about how old or how new it is though? Good music is good music. Here's the single, "It All Feels Right." This track is reminiscent of some of the greats from the psychedelic era, complete with a plethora of synths and tight harmonies. Give it a listen. I think you'll enjoy.

skinny love.

Nothing too fancy at all. Didn't even know all of the chords and the lyrics. It's just that sometimes music says it better than written words ever can and there is beauty in imperfection.

some tunes for you

Music is like a diary to me. Don't we all picture our lives as a movie from time to time, carefully choosing the soundtrack to emphasize every epic moment? I've been going through some changes, BIG changes. This week alone could potentially hold a career change and a relocation. Exciting, frightening, and a little melancholy all-in-one. Not sure exactly why but this song is one that I always come back to when life seems too big to handle. To me, it addresses the issue of growing up. The inevitability, the bittersweet feeling of trading youthful innocence and bliss for responsibilities but with more freedom, and the growing realization that there are two things we are guaranteed: death and taxes. I say all of this at the risk of sounding overtly macabre, but I feel the need to share my heart. I would be remiss to not make a point of saying that the darker parts of growing up are only a fraction of my thoughts right now and that excitement is at the forefront. Sometimes I feel so much older than I am and have to remind myself that I'm in the prime of my life and I need to have fun a little bit! But not too much fun. Anyone else here 21 going on 40? Ah, the early 20's. Gotta love 'em! The age of uncertainty. For as conflicted as I am, I can say with the utmost certainty that I wouldn't trade these times for anything. Now, if you thought that this post was sappy, just wait for the birthday post; just a little over a month away. (If you remember last year's at all...)
