I'm getting a little weepy-eyed going through these photos from the trip. We just got back and we only left two weeks ago but I still miss it so much! Iceland is so stunning. We kinda want to move there. (Not kidding.) I didn't take a ton of photos on the trip because I was busy doing other things but I did manage to snap a few to share with you guys. We spent our first and some of our last day wandering around Reykjavík.
Though we were incredibly exhausted from our redeye flight, we couldn't resist exploring a bit. Our first stop was Hallgrímskirkja-- the largest church in Iceland. From the top of it, you can see all of Rejkjavík. Isn't it lovely? Those colorful rooftops will have a little piece of my heart forever. Those mountains (Akrafjall is the one pictured) are even more breathtaking in person.
Here's a view of the church from the front. I think it looks like something out of Lord of the Rings. I'm trying to think of a way to describe its sheer size without setting myself up for a "that's what she said" and I can't. It's huge, it's humongous, and yes, a little phallic.
The view from the street was just as colorful from the view from above. I've never seen such a vibrant place, even in the midst of the rain and fog. The city was so warm and inviting. Oh, and CLEAN. Maybe the cleanest place I've ever seen.
Reykjavík has a lot of streets that are open to pedestrians only, which made the city seem kind of quiet in a sweet and cheerful way. There are no huge buildings so the city just feels like a big small town. There are quaint shops on every corner and restaurants everywhere. Our favorites were Durum (get the curry vegetable soup!) and Cafe Babalú.
From the city center, you can walk down to main road and get a great view of the harbor and the mountains.
Here's one of those pedestrian-only streets I was talking about. It felt weird to stand in the middle of the road and take these photos but I think I could get used to open streets. It gave the city a festival-vibe. So cozy!
On our last day in Iceland, B and I had a little impromptu photo shoot down by the harbor. (Thanks Danielle!) It was a little chilly but that view is gorgeous and worth braving the cold. I loved sitting on those rocks and looking out into the vast beauty of the snow-capped landscapes. I think we all experience moments in which we realize just how tiny we are-- that was one of those moments for me.
After chasing the Auroras all week and being disappointed by cloudy skies, we finally got to see them! This photo is blurry and terrible but shows just how huge they were. (Those lights at the bottom are Keflavík, the town just outside of the airport.)
Stay tuned for more photos from the trip!

That church... DAMN
ReplyDeleteIsn't it stunning??
Deleteso gorgeous! That church looks amazing, I can't imagine getting married there! Love the northern lights shot - they really are huge, that photo does a great job capturing it!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Everything there was even more breathtaking in real life. I can't wait to go back!
DeleteI am in love with this beautiful city, especially Skólavörðustígur... thanks for sharing your amazing photos! I was "stuck" in Iceland in 2010 during the volcanic eruptions- could have stayed forever and your shots make me miss it so much. Can't wait to see more!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great place to be "stuck!" ;) I can't wait to share more photos.
DeleteI can totally imagine the eye of Sauron staring down from Hallgrímskirkja!! Rain and fog and cool temps is my favourite. Love these photos.
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it home safe and sound as well.
Thank you! I kept saying that about Sauron haha. My husband kept rolling his eyes and giving me that "I don't even want to tell you how wrong you are" look because he's a total LOTR nerd.
