fabric and light

I've seen this craft on so many blogs and had to try out for myself. If you love playing around with lighting, this craft will be perfect for you. These little fixtures can be placed on a nightstand or a coffee table or anywhere else where they'll fit. They add a lovely, dim, flickering ambience to any room and they're incredibly simple to make!

What you'll need: A jar (you can use any kind. I just used Mason Jars from the craft store), strips of fabric (I chose a red to go with my rustic/exposed brick family room and also some burlap!), Mod Podge (glossy finish), Scissors, a paintbrush, and fake candles. You're going to want to use fake because fabric covered in glue is pretty flammable and I REALLY don't want you to burn your house down.

1. Coat the inside of your jar with the Mod Podge. It'll dry clear so don't be afraid to really put a lot of it on.

2. Place your strips of fabric into the jar. Don't be afraid to overlap. If you're using burlap like I did, in addition to coating the inside of the jar, the fabric will stick much easier if you also coat each individual strip before placing it in the jar. Super messy but worth it. If you can't fit your hand into the jar, you can use a ruler or a pencil to press the fabric into the hard-to-reach places.

3. Trim the excess fabric from the top. You can either leave the lid off completely or you can place the ring part of it on the top of the jar like I did. I didn't coat the inside of my jars with more Mod Podge, but if you'd prefer to do so, leave plenty of time in between applications for it to dry. The burlap will more than likely need to dry overnight. When I took the photographs below, the jar had been drying for 9 hours and the glue was still VERY wet.

4. When the glue is completely dry, place your fake candle inside and enjoy!
